Overview

Sexual desire fluctuations happen; they’re normal.

But how do you know when low libido has turned chronic?

What can you do to increase it and re-spice up your sex life?

Reduced sexual appetite in women (and yes, men too) is often the result of one or more physical, mental/emotional, or relationship factors: (1)

  • Fatigue and lack of sleep
  • Chronic diseases like autoimmune conditions, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, thyroid imbalances, and neurological disorders.
  • Hormone imbalances or changes that occur due to childbirth, breastfeeding, and menopause.
  • Overconsumption of alcohol may help you get in the mood momentarily, but it might dampen your desire over the long run.
  • Smoking decreases blood flow, which can make arousal and female stimulation more challenging to attain.
  • Side effects of depression and anxiety medications are known to include lowered libido and erectile dysfunction.
  • Chronic unmanaged stress, depression, and anxiety can lower sex drive.
  • Negative body image and low-self esteem impact your ability to express your sexual power.
  • Unresolved tension or unexpressed resentment towards your partner.

So what can you do to improve your libido naturally?

Here are some ideas to start:

7 Ways Essential Oils Can Help Support Your Libido

Essential oils (EOs) are highly concentrated plant extracts containing several active chemicals known to support physical and mental health and well-being.

Research supports the safe use of EOs to address several possible underlying causes for low libido.

Here are seven ways that EOs can help improve your sexual experience:

  1. Some essential oils like ylang ylang, rose, sandalwood, clary sage, and lavender are believed to contain aphrodisiac properties.
  2. Essential oils can help you get a better night’s sleep, and if you’re more rested a refreshed, you’re more likely to be in the mood.
  3. Research shows essential oils can support healthy blood pressure and blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation in the body. All of these factors can influence libido.
  4. Certain essential oils can help balance hormones and address symptoms associated with menopause
  5. Some essential oils like bergamot can positively impact anxiety, depression, and overall mental health.
  6. Essential oils may also be beneficial for thyroid health, which can impact libido.
  7. Essential oils can help balance your nervous system and help you switch from stress mode to relaxation (and arousal) mode.

Although there’s no conclusive scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of essential oils as a cure for sexual dysfunction and low libido, anecdotal feedback suggests these oils may also help support healthy sex drive:

  • Jasmine
  • Geranium
  • Vetiver
  • Neroli
  • Patchouli
  • Peppermint

Keep in mind that not everyone experiences the same effects with the same essential oils.

What works to arouse you might not work for me and vice versa.

Essential oil use is a very personal thing, and everyone’s biochemical makeup is different.

You really won’t know if an EO works for you until you try it.

Safety Concerns

Essential oils are most effective when used as part of a holistic approach to treat libido issues.

Pair them with the other lifestyle changes and practices to enhance their efficacy in your life.

When used safely and mindfully, EOs typically offer little to no side effects though they sometimes happen.

Common side effects are skin irritation, allergic reactions, breathing trouble, and increased sensitivity to sunlight after topical exposure.

Also note that EOs, whether diluted or not, should never be applied to the genitals.

Perform a patch test before using oils topically and wait 24-48 hours in case of a reaction.

If you experience any discomfort or adverse effects, stop using the oil immediately.

Research the contraindications of each essential oil you’re going to use as some oils aren’t suitable for babies, young children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, or people with underlying conditions like high blood pressure or epilepsy.

Essential oils are not regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), so there is no real quality control system.

Many of the products on the market are either diluted or contaminated with solvents and other chemicals.

Always choose high-quality, certified organic, therapeutic grade EOs to ensure maximum medicinal benefits.

4 Ways To Use Essential Oils For A Libido Boost

Oil Diffuser in the bedroom

Add 12-15 drops of EO in your diffuser and fill it with water. This is the best way to get a constant dose of the aromatic compounds while you’re getting busy.

Bed Spray

Add 15-20 drops of EO and mix with 1 tsp of ethyl alcohol or witch hazel. Place the mixture in a small dark glass bottle with a spray top and fill it with water. Use it whenever you need a little pick-me-up as well as in the mornings when you’re making the bed or at night when you’re about to do your thing. 😉

Sensual massage oil

Create your massage oil by diluting 2-3 drops of EO per 1 tsp of carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil. (You can also use our DIY essential oil blend below.) Take turns massaging your partner’s pulse points and body before getting intimate or if you’re flying solo give yourself a good ol’ Ayurvedic self-massage to help the body calm down and prepare for pleasure 🙂

Bath soak

Add 9 drops of EO, 1 cup of Epsom salts, ½ cup of coarse sea salt, and 2 tbsp. of baking soda for a relaxing soak.

A DIY Essential Oil Blend For Sensual Massage

  • 10 drops ylang ylang essential oil
  • 10 drops jasmine essential oil
  • 10 drops sandalwood essential oil
  • 10 drops clary sage essential oil
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 6 tablespoons of fractionated coconut oil
